Lumbini is a Buddhist pilgrimage site in the Rupandehi district of Nepal. It is the place where Queen Mayadevi gave birth to Siddhartha Gautama, who as the Buddha Gautama founded the Buddhist tradition. The Buddha lived between roughly 563 and 483 BCE. Lumbini is one of four magnets for pilgrimage that sprang up in places pivotal to the life of the Buddha, the others being at Kushinagar, Bodh Gaya, and Sarnath.

Lumbini is geographically located 25 km east of the municipality of Kapilavastu, Nepa where the Buddha lived until the age of 29. Lumbini has a number of temples, including the Mayadevi temple, and others under construction. Also located here is the Puskarini or Holy Pond where the Buddha's mother took the ritual dip prior to his birth and where he, too, had his first bath, as well as the remains of Kapilvastu palace. At other sites near Lumbini, earlier Buddhas were, according to tradition, born, achieved ultimate awakening and finally relinquished earthly form.

Yomari Punhi -meaning full moon of yomari-one of the popular Newar festivals is observed every year during the full moon of December.A yomari is a confection of rice-flour (from the new harvest)dough shaped like fig and filled with brown cane sugar and sesame seeds, which is then steamed. This delicacy is the chief item on the menu during the post-harvest celebration of Yomari Punhi. On this full moon day, people of the Kathmandu Valley offer worship to Annapurna, the goddess of grains, for the rice harvest. Groups of kids go neighborhood to beg yomari cakes from housewives in the evening. Sacred masked dances are performed in the villages of Hari Siddhi and Thecho at the southern end of the Valley to mark the festival.

The Newars, upon munching a mouthful of yomari, a sweet dish, await the end of their four days of devotion of god, following which they will be blessed with wealth, according to their belief. The people prepare yomaris, in the form of gods and goddesses such as Kumar, Ganesh, Laxmi and Kuber. In keeping with the culture, parents bless children from two to twelve years who are then offered yomaris. The children on the other hand perform the customary song and dance and ask for food and other gifts from the elders during the festival.
The festival is said to have started from panchal nagar(present day Panauti). Myth has it that Suchandra and Krita, a married couple, first experimented with fresh yield of rice from their field. And what took shape turned out came to be known as yomari. The new delicacy was eventually distributed among the villagers. As the food was liked by all, the bread was named yomari, which literally means 'tasty bread'. The myth further states that on the same day the couple offered the god of wealth, Kuber, the new delicacy, who was passing by in a disguise. Following this Kuber disclosed , his real identity and blessed the couple with wealth. He also declared that whoever will prepare yomari in the form of gods and goddesses on the full moon of December and observe four days of devotion to god, will get rid of poverty. The festival is celebrated on the second day when prayers are offered during which the yomaris are stored and not eaten on that very day. On the fourth and the final day the people belonging to the Newar community consume the sweet bread as a gift from gods and this practise also marks the end of the festival.

SLC results out; 64.31 percent pass

the Office of the Controller of Examinations (OCE), Bhaktapur published the results of this year's School Leaving Certificate (SLC) examinations, Friday evening.

According to the OCE, 64.31 percent of the total students who appeared in the SLC this year have passed the examinations. Altogether 2,59,916 examinees got through the SLC examination. Of this figure, 2,47,689 passed students are from regular category while 12,227 are exempted ones.

Chief Exam Controller Chitra Prasad Devkota informed that some 4,56,719 students had appeared in both regular and exempted category in the SLC examinations conducted in March this year.

The Office of the Controller of Examinations (OCE), Bhaktapur is all set to publish the results of this year's School Leaving Certificate (SLC) today.

Lekhnath Poudel, deputy spokesperson of the Ministry of Education, told Nepalnews that Exam Controller Chitra Prasad Devkota informed him that OCE is likely to publish SLC results today evening.

Although Devkota was not immediately available for comments, reports said that the board meeting of OCE will be held at 3 pm today to make final decision for publication of SLC results.

Some 4,56,719 students had appeared in both regular and exempted category in thi SLC examination held about four months ago

The Nepal’s tallest statue of Lord Shiva constructed at the initiative of Nepal’s Jain community is set to open for public visit from the fourth week of this month.

According to project sponsor Kamal Jain, the 108 feet tall statue in Sanga, some 20 km away from Kathmandu on the way to Banepa, will be inaugurated officially on June 21 by President Dr Ram Baran Yadav. The function will be graced by Hindu leader Shankaracharya from Badri.

The rituals for inauguration will start as early as June 14 and Kalash Yatra has been scheduled for June 19.

Though it was not intended to make it a place of attraction for tourists and other visitors, the statue has already drawn attention of Nepalese and foreigners as a place of retreat and religious destination.

The center spreading over 75 ropanies of land will not only host the Shiva statue, but also a natural therapy center serving visitors free of cost. Jain expects to employ some 50 people in the center, with monthly expenditure crossing Rs 500,000, for regular service delivery.

Though his religion mentions nothing about Lord Shiva, Jain says he chose this God, believed to reside in Kailash, further north from the statue, due to his closeness to Pashupatinath over the past 20 years he stayed in Kathmandu valley.

Built with cement, Jain said the statue, named Kailashnath Mahadev, can resist minor earthquakes and strong winds.

A Nepali sherpa set a record for the number of climbs of Mount Everest when he reached the top of the world's highest mountain for the 14th time on Monday, the Himalayan kingdom's tourism ministry said.

Aapa Sherpa, 44, broke his own record of 13 Everest climbs set last year, when he picked his way to the peak of the 8,850-metre summit from the south-east ridge route, pioneered by New Zealander Sir Edmund Hillary and Nepali sherpa Tenzing Norgay 51 years ago.

"This is his 14th time on the Everest summit and a world record," a ministry official, Purna Bhakta Tandukar, told Reuters.

He said Aapa reached the summit at 5:45 am (local time) and was followed by a team of two Belgian, one Greek, one Swiss, one US and 10 other Nepali sherpa climbers.

A total of 1,372 people have climbed Everest so far from the Nepali and Tibetan sides since 1953 - 241 of them more than once - and 178 have died on its slopes.

There are 64 expeditions on the mountain from both sides in the current climbing season that started in March and continues through May.

After choking the nation for six consecutive days, the Unified CPN (Maoist) has decided to end its 'indefinite' general strike.

A meeting of the UCPN (M)'s standing committee held Friday evening at party chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal's Naya Bazaar residence decided to end the general strike "in view of the difficulties caused by the general strike to ordinary people" and the violent confrontations taking place during the demonstrations.

The party will organise mass meetings followed by demonstrations in the capital other major other cities across the country on Saturday and will picket Singha Durbar on Sunday.

"We have decided to stop the general strike considering the difficulty caused to the ordinary people, and also in view of the conspiracy hatched by this government to instigate violence. But we have not stopped our people's movement-III," Maoist chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal told media persons after the meeting.

Dahal informed that the party would carry out a series of protest programmes until May 28, the deadline to issue the new constitution.

Describing the 22-party government as a "curse to the nation", the Maoist chairman, however, claimed that the protests were not aimed just to get the party in the power.

The Maoist party had enforced nationwide general strike from Sunday, a day after a it staged a major demonstration in the capital. The general strike brought the nation to a complete halt with transportation services, industries, educational institutions and marketplaces remaining closed down while the bandh was starting to cause shortage of food and vegetables in the capital and outside.

Initially, the demonstrations were largely peaceful, but as the general strike went on, there was increasing violence between the Maoist agitators and those defying the bandh.

The Maoists had brought tens of thousands of cadres from around the country for the agitations.

The protesters have, however, allowed the ambulances, water tankers and vehicles of media and diplomatic missions to operate during the strike.

While the protests have been largely peaceful, minor incidents of violence were reported at some places.

About 30 Maoist cadres carrying bamboo sticks attacked around a dozen shops in Anamnagar and Ghattekulo area in Kathmandu for defying the general strike this morning.

The attacked dairies and milk van in the area despite party's announcement earlier that dairy vans would be allowed to ply on the roads.

According to a dairy shop owner in Ghattekulo, the protesters cadres suddenly attacked his shop without saying anything.

In Anamnagar, the Maoist cadres opened the shutters and vandalized shops. In Lalitpur, they misbehaved with the workers of some factories in the area. The Maoist cadres in Chabhil beat an employee of the National Television this morning.

In Satungal and Naikap, the local residents counter attacked the Maoist demonstrators. The situation remained tense for some time after the
locals confronted the agitators.

Prior to the arrival some 300 years ago of Tibetan migrants, Langtang Gosaikunda was considered “Hidden Valley,” a place of refuge, and it remains a well-kept secret. The Langtang Gosaikunda lies directly north of Kathmandu on the border with Tibet. Though easily accessible and only a day’s drive from Kathmandu, the Lagtang region remains a relatively less trekked area. Here the mountainscape is spectacular. On either side of valley, mountains rise, soaring into the sky. The walk-in is picturesque, with untouched forests and abundant flora and fauna. Langur monkeys and Ghoral are easily spotted along the stream, while Himalayan Thar dot the cliffs on high.

The eclipse began from Mahendrangar in the western Nepal at 12:15 p.m. and started at 12:24 p.m. in Kathmandu. Weather permitting, the partial solar eclipse will be visible from all parts of the country.

The rare astronomical occurrence, which takes place after the moon comes between the sun and the earth in a straight line, will last for more than three hours and end in Jhapa in eastern Nepal at 3:43 p.m, according to B.P Koirala Memorial Planetarium, observatory and Science Museum Development Board.

The board said up to 65.5 percent of the Sun will appear dark at 2:14 p.m. It has also urged people not to observe the sun with naked eye, or by using a regular binocular or telescope during the eclipse as doing so could damage the eye forever.

Swasthani Mela is one of the most leading pious Hindu festival. it is known as " Madhab Narayan Brata" . It lasts for a month long duration. It starts on the full moon day of Paush (Jan) and ends later one month on the full moon day of Magh(Feb). The devotees fast for a month eating only one time a day; taking always the holy bath in the morning; and wearing the nicely daily washed pure clothes. All of his hand and feet’s nail should be nicely trimmed. He should worship to lord shiva by making a sanctum; and should eat only after worshipping and reading the holy Swasthani book. After finishing the Puja he or she should distribute the fruits or sweets as a Prasad to the listeners. On the last day means after one month. On the Magh’s full moon day, one hundred eight small oil cooked rice’s round breads should be prepared for the Prasad. Out of these 108 breads, after completing the puja, the eight breads should be given to his or her son. If she or he doesn’t have son, it should be given to their blood brother’s son; and the rest of the hundred bread, he should distribute as a Prasad to the Swasthani puja listeners and also it should be consumed by her too. If she or he doesn’t have the blood brother’s son; it should be spilled in some holy rivers by asking the Goddess to be fulfilled their so-called wills.

Swasthani fasting is the fasting practiced by Goddess mother Parvati in the Golden age to receive her lord shiva as her husband. Since her childhood she used to worship and play by making sand’s lord shiva linga (small pole). Every time while on her eating and playing time she used to chant lord Shiva’s name always; one day lord shiva became very much happy and unearthed from the ground automatically by looking her devotion and fasting; then he graced her to her husband for ever.

That why millions of Hindus women practice this one month’s long fasting to their husband’s prosperous life; and the unmarried women do this fasting for to get a very rational husband. The rest of the males and females do this fasting to achieve their wills from the Goddess. A huge religious gathering takes place in most of the holy rivers on this day like the other holy religious days. The most significant fair takes place at Sali Nadi in Sankhu which river’s name has also been described in the holy Swasthani book. The fair takes place there since the beginning day of the fasting; and many devotees stay there itself in the pilgrimage during the month by fasting. That’s why the place remains quite spectacular during the month.

Swasthani is a great holy Hindu scripture. All of the Hindus who have completed this fasting, have been blessed to get the happy life by the grace of the Goddess; so this scripture belongs to most of the Hindu houses reverentially. In the Golden age Navaraj Bhramini woman ( mother of Navaraj) was conceived, she did not have any thing to eat and complete the child’s thirteen day’s religious rite; so before the delivery shiva sharma(Navaraj’s Father) had gone to beg the alms he died falling from a tree where he had gone there to eat some fruits. Goma gave birth the child Navaraj but shiva sharma did not come back home though a long time had been past.

One day Navaraj went in search of his father Shiva Sharma when he was grown up and married as well; finally he noticed by some one the story of his father’s death from falling off the fruit’s tree; he became very much unhappy and performed his last rites there itself near the river. Navaraj thought of not going back at home without earning some money for his mother; so he decided to find job around some where at some king’s palace. When the son also did not come back and she couldn’t find his any whereabouts. Goma became fickle minded. One day the saptarishis from the heaven fortunately arrived at her house and suggested her to do the swasthani Goddess fasting to be relieved from all of her troubles and to meet his disappeared son as well; then to get a happy and wealthy life. They taught her all the procedures of the worship and fasting. Goma Bhramini did accordingly to the fasting and worship for a month and luckily on the last day of her puja her son Navaraj arrived suddenly in the house; the she became very happy but sad too by receiving the death of her husband. Till that time her sister-in-law chandrawati(Nawaraj’s wife) and already been gone at her parental house. Nawaraj the whole phenomenon of her fasting of the Goddess mother swasthani according to the advice of the saptarishis arrived from the heaven and gave him some Prasad to eat.

In the next morning navaraj went to take bath in the near by river; and luckily Swasthani mother appeared there automatically and said him that he will become the king of Lawanya country in a few day’s time by the virtue of his mother’s worshipping and fasting in the name of swasthani Goddess. Truly in some day’s time; when the elephant was released there to find the king with Golden urn and garland in the Lawanya County; it anointed and garlanded to Navaraj as a King though there were many people assembled there to became the king by the grace of Swasthani Goddess; also he was wedded there with some princess.

After becoming the king Navaraj send his courtiers to bring his mother and the previous wife Chandrawati. His mother Goma arrived but Chandrawati could’t arrive because she was fallen in a divinely trap of Goddess swasthani since she had loathed to the Goddess on the way. On her way the palanquin holders became very much thirsty and exhausted then went in search of water in the Sali Nadi. They saw the heaven’s nymphs worshipping and fasting in the name of Goddess swasthani there in the river Sali Nadi and gave them some Prasad to eat for salvation. Some of the Prasad they brought for Chandrawati too. They gave the Prasad to Chandrawati but Chandrawati was very much enraged and angry because of the courtiers’ delaying to come. She shouted loudly to them and they said,” It was because of looking the Nymphs’ Swasthani puja”. She threw immediately all the Prasad that was given her and discarded a lot to swasthani Goddess spelling many filthy words. Immediately a great typhoon appeared there and Chandrawati was thrown in to the Sali River but the courtiers were taken to the heaven.

Since the day of her falling in the river, the river also became motionless to flow; then one day king Navaraj sent some people to achieve the clue. The people threw some net to find out the things there and chandrawati came out along with the net looking like a wooden log; then they threw it by the riverbank. Since then the river started to flow taking its motion. Chandrawati struggled there for many days in the riverbank. Suddenly one day the Nymphs from the heaven arrived there to start the Swasthani’ Puja and fasting; and chandrawati saw them doing this one month’s long puja. The Nymphs became very much unhappy to look the poor condition of that sinful woman since they suggested her to do the Swasthani puja to get rid from all of her past sins. She then commemorated her previous vice when she had hatefully thrown the Goddess’ prassad spitting to it. She repented a lot for her mistake and asked with Goddess for the excuses; and started to do the worship along with these help of the Nymphs. Finally she was relieved out from all of her sins and got Golden opportunity to meet king Navaraj and to become the queen of Lawanya country by the grace of Goddess Swasthani.

So in this way our Hindu mythology believes that Swasthani is the true Goddess and when some one practices this fasting and puja; all of them have been relieved from their poor economic life to change in to the good one. So she is the most beloved Goddess for the devotees. The devotees who can’t go to Sali Nadi they practice this one month long fasting and puja at their home only. Really it’s the pious ceremony and at the end of the puja the devotees should donate subscriptions to the Bhramin priests and the poor people for virtue. The grand picturesque fair takes place during the whole month there at Sali Nadi at Sankhu.

World record holder robbed

KATHMANDU, DEC 17 - Min Bahadur Sherchan, who currently holds the world record as the oldest man to climb Mt. Everest, was accosted and robbed of his belongings while returning home on Monday. Among his stolen belongings is his original Guinness World Record holder certificate.

“There were no lights, and in the darkness, I did not see my assailants,” said 77-year-old Sherchan, who was returning from the Copenhagen Climate Summit. Sherchan was robbed after he got off his bus on the Ring Road area around 6:30 in the evening, a five-minute walk from his home in Indrayani heights in Sanepa.

“I did not know what was happening. I was suddenly pushed to the ground, and when I got up, I saw two people running away with my bag,” said Sherchan. Apart from his certificate, the looters also stole a video-camera worth Rs. 36,000, his passport (number 390667), citizenship, birth and marriage certificates, earphones, visiting cards, photos, and a pen drive containing important documents.

The police have been notified, and a reward has been offered to anyone who returns the documents. “The investigations are ongoing. No arrests regarding this case have been made so far,” said Mohan Kumar Sherpa, Police Inspector of the Metropolitan Police Sector, Sanepa.

Sherchan was returning from Copenhagen, where he had gone to promote world peace, conservation of the earth’s resources, and humanitarian welfare through the ‘Save the Himalayas’ campaign. The campaign was part of the Copenhagen Climate Summit.

Muslims in a rural village in Parsa district have shown a remarkable example of religious harmony by contributing to build a temple for Hindu minority.

Muslims have initiated construction of a temple in Baluwa Tole in Mahadevpatti-2 where just 10 of the 115 households are Hindus. They have started the campaign as the village, that has two mosques, doesn´t have any temple for the Hindus.

“We have come together for this campaign being good neighbors,” treasurer of the temple construction committee Gayasuddin said. Most of the people of the village have contributed financially or volunteered to work, with Gayasuddin personally contributing more than Rs 50,000.

Gayasuddin said the Hindus had also contributed in the construction of a mosque previously revealing the tolerant culture of the village. The Hindu families have been delighted by reciprocation of Muslims through this campaign. “We´re much obliged to them. We will always have respect for them,” said one Jogendra Yadav.

This campaign bodes well for religious harmony in the region as common people in the surrounding have also taken it positively. “Muslims and Hindus in each village of Mahadevpatti Village Development Committee (VDC) have always lived amicably. This latest case has further delighted both the communities,” said immediate past chairman of Mahadevpatti VDC Ram Avatar Patawari.

He said the communities have been inviting each other in their religious festivals for years. “The Muslims feed sweets to Hindus in Eid while the Hindus invite them for feast during Dashain,” Patawari added.

The news of construction of temple in Baluwa Tole has also reached across the border to Indian villages and contributions have started to pour in from Muslims and Hindus there as well. “Everyone walking though the village has been impressed by this act. This has fostered religious harmony in the region,” Assistsant Sub Inspector at the Baluwatole Police Post Kalyan Kumar Karki said.

Global Warming

Come Friday and Nepal will briefly steal the international spotlight when the government will hold a cabinet meeting at Gorakshep near the Everest Base Camp. The idea is to draw the attention of the world community toward the impact of climate change on Nepal’s Himalayas. However, the meeting will go beyond sending across a symbolic message. The 20-minute-long meeting, which will take place just days before the UN Conference on Climate Change scheduled to be held in Copenhagen, Denmark from Dec 7-18, will also announce two new conservation areas, endorse both Nepal’s position paper to be read out by Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal at the climate meet and the Summitteers’ Summit scheduled for Dec 11 at Copenhagen.

By now, it’s evident that the threat of climate change is real. Maldives that stands at an average altitude of 2.1 meters above sea level, for example, faces the danger of being wiped away due to rising sea level, a direct fallout of unprecedented melting of glaciers due to increasingly rising global temperatures. The island-nation too had resorted to an ingenious method of highlighting the threat of global warming by holding an underwater cabinet meeting last month.

Countries such as Nepal and Maldives, whose contribution in damaging the climate is miniscule at the most, must stand united at Copenhagen and demand compensation from rich countries for having to share the burden of the mess that they are primarily responsible for creating during their march to modernity. Poor countries should also seek compensation from developing countries such as China, India and Brazil. As they have begun to grow on a fast-track mode in recent times, they too have gone on to become major global polluters. Additionally, poor countries should ask for funds and support from both developed and developing countries to invest in clean and green energy. It’s unfortunate that while rich and developing countries lock horns over climate change issues, countries such as Nepal are often ignored.

The Copenhagen meet will attempt to chalk out a new treaty on climate change to replace the 1997 Kyoto Protocol, which expires in 2012. However, there are skepticisms that such a deal might not be possible at Copenhagen because of differences between developing and developed countries on the volume of emission cuts. However, we hope that in the interest of protecting Mother Earth, countries would give up their dogged stands and show flexibility to come up with a deal that is fair to everyone, including countries such as Nepal

According to Dhenukh Chaurasiya, vice chairman of Animal Sacrifice Management Sub-committee, at least 16,000 bu-ffaloes were slaughtered on the first day. “The exact number will be out by Wednesday after we finish counting the heads,” he said. He added that the number of sacrificed animals could be higher this time compared to the last festival.

The sacrifice was conducted at a concrete slaughterhouse built near the temple where thousands of animals brought by devotees were slain by more than 200 men with swords and machetes.

It is believed one’s desire will be fulfilled after offering puja and sacrifice to the goddess during the festival.

In view of the possibility of epidemic, the festival organisers have contracted local contractors to manage the carcasses of slaughtered animals. The contractors have paid 5.1 million rupees for the use of flesh, hide and bones of the animals.

“Earlier, the festival management committee used to earn nearly 2 million rupees selling hide, while the local dalits ate the flesh,” Chaurasiya said.

The dalit community has refused to consume the flesh of slaughtered animals this year.

1. Lumbini, the birth place of Loard Buddha

Brief Description

Siddhartha Gautama, the Lord Buddha, was born in 623 B.C. in the famous gardens of Lumbini, which soon became a place of pilgrimage. Among the pilgrims was the Indian emperor Ashoka, who erected one of his commemorative pillars there. The site is now being developed as a Buddhist pilgrimage centre, where the archaeological remains associated with the birth of the Lord Buddha form a central feature.

Justification for Inscription

The Committee decided to inscribe this site on the basis of criteria (iii) and (vi). As the birthplace of the Lord Buddha, the sacred area of Lumbini is one of the holiest places of one of the world's great religions, and its remains contain important evidence about the nature of Buddhist pilgrimage centres from a very early period.

The Shey-Phoksundo National Park

Established in 1984, this national park is situated in the mountainous regions of Western Nepal. It is the largest national park in the country and features luxuriant forests, snow leopard and blue sheep. Besides having a wide variety of trees and plant life, the park has a great variety of animals. Himalayan tahr, toral, serow, leopard, wolf, jackal, black bear, weasel, mouse hare, rhesus monkey, langur and yellow-throated marten. It also has a great many birds. Because of the number of potentially dangerous animals, strict attention should be given to the guides in charge.

Khaptad National Park

Also established in 1984, this park is situated in the mid-mountain region of Nepal's far-western areas. The park features a unique mid-mountain ecosystem and is situated at roughly 300 m above sea level. Noted geographically for it's beautiful rolling forests and plateaus, the park has a great variety of vegetation. If you're an animal lover, you will find leopard, yellow-throated marten, tahr, Impeyan pheasant, chkor partridge, monal, griffin, red and yellow-billed blue magpie and kalij pheasant. The park also has a number of butterfiles and moths. At the center of the park you will find the beautiful Ashram of Khaptad Swami. Because the park has religious significance, drinking, smoking and violence in the park are prohibited.

Royal Bardiya National Park

This park was first established in 1976 and as such is not only one of the older parks but also one of the most undisturbed. It is situated in the mid-Far Western Terai, near the Karnali River. Roughly 70% of the park is covered with sal forest. The rest enjoys a mixture of grassland, savanna and riverine forest. There are no people living in the valley and all farming that once occurred here has ceased. As a result, there is a lot of regeneration of vegetation which means the habitat is excellent for wildlife. The park features a number of endangered animals such as the wild elephant, the rhinoceros, tiger, black buck, swamp deer, gharial crocodile, marsh mugger crocodile and Gangetic dolphin. It also features a number of endangered birds. There are more than 30 types of mammals, 200 bird species and a variety of reptiles and fish in the park.

Rara National Park

Located in North-West Nepal, most of the park lies in the Mugu District. It is the countries smallest park but contains the countries biggest lake. The majority of the park is coniferous forest bit deciduous trees like Indian hours-chestnut, walnut and Himalayan popula are also found. Musk deer, black bear, gorla, tahr, leopard and wild boar are common. Snow trout is the only recorded fish species in the lake. Besides a good variety of normal birds, a large number of waterfowl are also found in the park.

Sagarmatha National Park

This park is located to the North-East of Kathmandu in the Kumbu region. It includes the legendary Mt Everest as well as several other well-known mountains. The park has been a World Heritage Site since 1979 and features a stunning variety of glacial valleys, deep gorges and heavy forestation. You are most likely to spot tahr, goral, musk deer and serow. The park also has snow leopard and black bear but these are seldom seen. You might also be fortunate enough to spot weasel, maren, mouse hare (pika), langur monkey and jackal. The park is also home to a population of roughly 3000 Sherpa who trade livestock and herd animals.

Parsa Wildlife Reserve

The park extends over parts of the Chitwan, Parsa, Bara and Makawanpur districts in the center of the country. It features sub-tropical-type forests and Churiya hills. The flora is varied and home to a good number of wild elephant, tiger, sloth bear, leopard, gaur, wild dog and blue bull, to name just a few. There are also a great number of birds and snakes, including the king cobra, which enjoy the hot tropical climate.

Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve

The Koshi Tappu is situated on the flood plains of the Sapta-Koshi in the Saptari and Sunsari districts of eastern Nepal. The reserves boundaries are defined by the river and the reserve area is subject to flood during the monsoon season. The river often changes it's course from one season to another. The reserve is mainly filled with grassland and scrub forest but also has some riverine forest. It serves as an important habitat for wildlife – most notably the wild buffalo. There are only about 100 buffalo living in the areas and this is purported to be the last surviving population of these creatures in the wild. The reserve is also home to a great many fish, birds and other wildlife.

Royal Shuklaphanta Wildlife Reserve

Situated in the southern part of Far-Western Nepal, the reserve falls mainly in the Kanchanpupr District. The reserves most outstanding feature is it's large population of swamp deer of which there is an estimated 2000 to 2500 members of the species in the area. Besides a variety of wildlife and birds, the reserve is also home to the rare Bengal florican. You may also spot Marsh muggers, Indian python, monitor lizards, cobras, rat snakes and kraits but these are seldom seen.

Dhorpatan Hunting Reserve

For those who love testing their hunting skills and increasing the trophies on their wall, this is the only hunting reserve in the country. It serves both Nepalese and foreign sports hunters with a variety of game animals and it is carefully managed. This is the only place in Nepal where hunting is allowed and permits and permission must be obtained before attempting to participate in the sport. The reserve is home to a great number of blue sheep which are considered to be a highly coveted trophy. You may also find leopard, goral, serow, tahr, black bear, barking deer, langur, mouse hare, wild boar and rhesus macaque as well as a number of bird species, deer and wolf.

As with other national parks around the globe, the flora and fauna in these wildlife reserves are protected by law. Littering, hunting and the general damaging of the environment is prohibited and may even carry a fine. We strongly recommend that you follow the advice of your guide when viewing animals and that you refrain from damaging the environment in anyway. If you only leave footprints and shoot pictures, the legacy of Nepal's National Parks will hopefully survive long into the future.

Only an awe-stricken silence can come close to match the experience of going on a mountain flight to encounter the tallest mountains of this earth. No wonder mountain fly-bys have become a popular tourist attraction in Nepal. Four airlines offer regular flights taking you over the snow-capped peaks of the Himalaya. and offer a panoramic view of the Himalaya in just one hour. As the aircraft lifts up and heads towards the east, passengers don't have to wait too long to find out what's in store for them.

First to their far left visitors see Gosaithan, also called Shisha Pangma, standing at the majestic height of 8,013 m. Immediately to the right of Gosaithan, there appears Dorje Lakpa (6,966 m), a mountain that looks like the number 8 lying down and covered with snow. To the right of Dorje Lakpa is Phurbi-Ghyachu, which looms over the Kathmandu Valley.

As the plane moves along, the mountains come closer and closer. Next on the vision is Choba-Bharnare, the smallest one of the lot at 5,933 m but singularly stubborn as it has never been climbed. Then appears the mountain that is not only prominent in sight but also in spirituality - Gauri Shanker. Lord Shiva and his consort Gauri are said to protect this mountain, at the proud height of 7,134 m, and the summit had a history of unsuccessful attempts till 1979. Gauri-Shanker is sharp and very conspicuous during the mountain flight.

As the plane moves towards the land of the rising sun, the eastern Himalaya, a succession of glorious mountains follow. Melungtse, a plateau-like mountain, stretches up to 7,023 m. Chugimago at 6,297 m is still a virgin, waiting to be climbed. Next is Karyolung, an intensely white mountain that at 6,511 m gleams with the rising sun. Cho-Oyu is the eighth highest mountain in the world. Reaching a height of 8,201 m, it appears stunningly beautiful from the aircraft.

Next on the menu is Gyachungkang, at a majestic height of 7,952 m, considered an extremely difficult climb. To the right of Gyachungkang is Pumori (7,161 m). As passengers get closer to Everest, there's Nuptse (7,855 m), which means West Peak, signifying its direction from Everest. Finally, there's Everest (8,848 m) itself, known as Sagarmatha by the Nepalese and Chomolungma by the Tibetans. Much has already been written about Everest, but actually witness it to face to face during a mountain flight is something else. Even while it looms there in front of the eyes, it remains an enigma, this highest spot on earth.

Nepal is rich in its own culture. Malla period was of great importance for the cultural, social & religious development of Nepala Mandala (the valley). There is now a tendency to consider this period of history as golden age of Nepal. In this very period Kantipur, Bhaktapur and Lalitpur developed incomparable splendor. Nepal's original Era Nepal Samvat was begun by Sankhadhar Sakhwah , in Malla period, when Raghab Dev was ruling in Kantipur and Anand Malla in Bhaktapur. It was started from 20th of October 879 Thursday. It is lunar calendar and it begins with the day of new moon of Kartik (Kachhala). Till now, whatever the festivals the Nepalese people celebrate such as Dashain, Tihar, ChaitE Dasain, Teej, Shivaratri, Gaijatra, Chhath etc. are according to lunar calendar of Nepal era (except very few). Nepal era was official era of Nepal in Malla period and Bikram Era was brought in official use in only in Rana period by Chandra Shamsher.

There are 12 months (and 13 in every three years) according to this calendar. New month stars from the day after new moon day i.e. Paru (Pratipada). From Paru to full moon day it is called 'Tho' then up to new moon day it is called 'Ga'. So a month is divided into 2 parts 'Tho' ad 'Ga' such as Kachhala Tho Kachhalaga Ga and so on.

It was a bad thing that an intimate video of Namrata Shrestha and Kichaa Man Chitrakaar (DJ Tantrik) was released to the general public. They were aspiring artists in Nepali film and music industries. That might be the reason they got overwhelming response from Nepali people at home and those living all around the world. After a similar incident involving singer Prakash Ojha this was the second biggest sex scandal in Nepal. I don’t know weather Namrata and Tantrik forgot about Prakash Ojha incident or choose to ignore it. Apart from these events there are many such videos being released from time to time in discussion forums. Those people, being unknown to general public, do not attract that much attention. But the person involved do not get less pain and frustration than the well known persons like Namrata or Ojha. It is not only the person who is seen in the video; there are whole lot of persons, like spouses, children, friends, and relatives, who are affected by such incidents. Our society is not that advanced to digest such acts released to public. So, care should be exercised while taking such photos or videos. Damage once done can not be reversed.

Nature of Nepal

Nepal also has an abundance of rivers most of which originate in the Himalaya while some flow down from Tibet. They all flow on to India, many of them joining the holy Ganges. High amid the mountains there are glacial lakes and spectacular valleys where few people venture. Recent physiographic data show that around 4.27 million hectares (29 % of total land area) is made up of forests, 1.56 million hectares (10.6%) of scrubland and degraded forest, 1.7 million hectares
(12%) of grassland, 3.0 million hectares (21%) of farmland and 1.0 million hectares (7%) of un-cultivated land.

Climatic conditions within Nepal vary from one place to another in accordance with the geographical features. In the north, summers are cool and winters severe, while in the south summers are sub-tropical and winters mild. The monsoon that brings rain from June through September affects most of the country except those that lie in the rain-shadow areas like Mustang which is within Nepal but a part of the Tibetan plateau. Large tracts of forested land have been preserved as national parks and wildlife reserves where endangered species like the Royal Bengal tiger and the Greater one-horned rhinoceros roam freely along with an amazing variety of mammals and reptiles that include bear, leopards, hyenas, wild boar, wild elephants, monitor lizards, crocodiles, pythons, turtles and various species of insects and birds. Nepal is home to almost 10 percent of the world's bird species among which 500 species are found in the Kathmandu valley alone.

The most abundant natural resource in Nepal is water. Much of the rivers have been harnessed for hydro-power but they also play a crucial role in tourism as most of them are suitable for adventure sports like kayaking and rafting.

The Himalayas are not merely a source of revenue through mountaineering and trekking, they are also mined for quartz, lignite, copper, cobalt and iron ore. The scenic beauty of the countryside attracts hordes of trekkers while there seems to be an ever increasing number of mountaineers attempting to climb the hundreds of peaks that have been opened for climbing.

UNESCO World Heritage Natural Sites

CHITWAN NATIONAL PARK
Nepal's first and most famous national park is situated in the Chitwan Doon or the lowlands of the Inner Terai. Covering an area of 932 sq km. the park includes hilly areas of the Siwalik Range covered by deciduous sal forest. One fifth of the park is made up of the floodplains of the Narayani, Rapti, and the Reu Rivers and is covered by dense tall elephant grass interspersed with riverine forests of silk cotton (kapok), acacia and sisam trees. This ecologically diverse area is the last remaining home in Nepal for more than 300 of the endangered Asian one-horned rhinoceros and harbours one of the largest populations of the elusive and rare Bengal tiger. Besides rhino and tiger, Chitwan also supports a great variety of flora and fauna. There are four species of deer, including the spotted chittal, leopard, sloth bear, wild boar, rhesus monkey, grey langur monkey, wild dog, small wild cats, the white stockinged gaur (the world's largest wild cattle) and many other smaller animals. The swampy areas and numerous oxbow lakes of Chitwan provide a home for marsh crocodiles. In a stretch of the Narayani river is found one of the few remaining populations of the rare and endangered fish-only eating gharial, or Gangetic crocodile. Here also is found one of the world's four species of freshwater dolphins. For the ornithologist and the amateur bird-watcher the park offers excellent possibilities with more than 450 species recorded. Some of the resident specialities are several species of woodpeckers, hornbills, Bengal florican, and red-headed trogons. Winter birds such as waterfowl, Brahminy duck, pintails and bareheaded geese, amongst many other cold weather visitors are drawn by the sanctuary of the park's rivers. In the summer the forest is alive with nesting migrants such as the fabulous paradise flycatcher, the Indian pitta and parakeets.

SAGARMATHA NATIONAL PARK ( Mt. Everest )
Unique among natural heritage sites world-wide is the Sagarmatha National Park, which includes Mt. Everest (8,848 m) and other high peaks such as Lhotse Shar, Cho Oyu, Ama Dablam, Pumori, Kangtega, Gyachung Kang, Thamserku and Kwangde. Located North-east of Kathmandu, Sagarmatha National Park is 1,148 sq km. in area and consists of the upper catchment areas of the Dudh Koshi, Bhote Koshi and the Imja Khola rivers. Much of the park lies above 3,000m. Sagarmatha is rugged, with deep gorges, glaciers and unnegotiable ice and rock faces. Locally known as the 'Khumbu', it is the home of the famous Sherpa people. The Sherpas make a living by farming barley and potatoes and graze their yaks in high altitude pastures. Young Sherpas have also made their name in mountaineering and the trekking industry has of late become the community's economic mainstay. In 1979 the park was declared a World Heritage Site.

Trees such as rhododendron, birch, blue pine, juniper and silver fir are found up to an altitude of 4,000 meters above which they give way to scrub and alpine plants. In late spring and summer, the hillsides around the villages of Namche Bazaar, Khumjung, Thyangboche and Thame are a riot of colours with several species of rhododendon in bloom. Wildlife most likely to be seen in Sagarmatha are the Himalaya tahr, ghoral, musk deer, pikka (mouse hare) weasel and occasionally jackal. Other rarely seen animals are Himalayan black bear, wolf, lynx and snow leopard. Birds commonly seen are Impeyan pheasant, blood pheasant, snow cock, snow pigeon, red billed and yellow billed chough, Himalayan griffin vulture and lammergeier.

Covering an area of 147,181 sq.km, Nepal shares a border with India in the west, south and east and with the Tibetan Autonomous Region of China in the north. Kanchan Kalan in Jhapa district is the lowest point at 70m above sea level and the summit of Mt. Everest at 8,848 m is the highest. From east to west, Nepal is 800 km long and only 230 km. north to south at its widest. Within this narrow stretch of land there is incredible diversity in topography ranging from a sub-tropical climate in the tarai (plains) to Alpine conditions in the Himalayan regions. Mountains, mid hills, valleys, lakes and plains dominate the landscape of this landlocked country. Eight of the fourteen peaks over eight thousand meters lie in Nepal including Everest, the highest in the world.

Shree-Yantra

Different yantras, for tantric puja or meditation , are used by tantric pundits. Among the many yantras prevalent the shree yantra (shree stands for ' Laxmi ' the goddess of prosperity) is said to be the most important and is called the king of yantras by the tantric adepts. Shree yantra is composed of two sets of triangles one of which is composed of Shreekanthas (four male Shiva triangles denoting gradually involved energy) and the other set of triangles is composed of Shivayavatis (five female or shakti triangles denoting five senses of knowledge and action, and five subtle and gross forms of matter). These two triangles reflect the unison of Shiva and Shakti.

It is belived that Shakti is always in unison with Shiva, existing within each and every being as the inner self; the state of existence, consciousness and bliss. Shiva is the Ashraya (basis) of Shakti which in turn, being his creative faculty, is the basis of the whole universe. Hence, she is known as Shree the primordial energy existing within Shiva and yantra is her divine extension network. Without her operation, this visible cosmos would not be possible.

This universe and all it's contents are basically composed of panchtatva or five basic elements comprising of Prithvi (earth), Apas (water), Tejas (light), Maruta (wind) and Aakaash (sky). It is believed that our body is also composed of the same basic elements called pinda. The unison of Pinda, the individual body, with Brahmaanda, the cosmic body, is beautifully represented by this great yantra.

The objective of meditation on Shree-yantra is to unite with the universal mother, in her forms of mind, life and matter, to attain consciousness and divinity. The Yantra is therefore transformed from a material object of lines and curves into a mental state of union with the universe.

Satkon

The Satkon is composed of two sets of overlapping triangles. One is the symbol of Shiva, which stands for eternal being (static by nature), and the other is a symbol of Shakti, the most active female. This popular symbol of the union of Shakti and Shiva, that indicates the union of the two, is represented in several Nepali works of art like the Mandala paintings , windows and doors etc. The beautiful temple residence of Devi Annapurna Ajima, at Ason Tol in Kathmandu, has one of the most exquisite Satkon patterns in its windows. The Satkon signifies the five basic senses and the extra sensory perception, that significantly makes it the six pointed star. This symbol is believed to have originated from ancient tantric Hinduism. On the other hand the Buddhist believe that Satkon symbolizes the perfection of the highest form of wisdom (Pragya), however, the Mahayanists accept it as a great symbol of Pragya (knowledge or enlightenment) and Upaya (active force or the power of the female principal) united.

Swastika

Swastika, a Sanskrit word which means doing good for all, is a very ancient oriental symbol. This symbol can be seen in wood-carvings , bronze castings, thangka paintings and many other traditional forms of art. In Buddhism, the four hands of Swastika signifying Maitree (friendship), Karuna (compassion), Mudita (happiness) and Upershya (indifference), are four divine merits ortalents. This theory is very dominant in our culture. According to Sadhanmala (one of the most authentic Buddhist texts), the four merits represent four ideal ways to Nirvana every aspirant should mediate on. It is believed that the Mahayanists, in due course of time, developed an iconography based on all those four merits and soon created Swastika to proudly add to their pantheon of gods. The many deities were all given the same merit names like Maitree, Karuna, Mudita and Upekshya. Hindus as well Buddhists worship them in Nepal. Among many such deities of Nepal, the four most beautifully built bronze statues of these merit gods can be seen in Hiranyavarana Mahavihar (Golden temple) of Patan built by Vaskar Varma in 12th century.

Shiva Linga

The linga is the phallic symbol of lord Shiva and it displays supreme power generally identified analogue of cosmic deity. It occupies the "womb cell" in temples while the outer structure of this double sex diety signifies its determined creative function. Creation, in tantra is described as sexual self-relation. The Brihadaranyaka Upanisad says that one alone knows no delight and so the female partner was generated. According to the Puranas, Lord Shiva assumed the form of Lingam (the phallic symbol of universal pro-creation), on the night of Shivaratri, to save the universe from a big threat of destruction. It is said that when Lord Shiva swallowed the Halahala poison, which had emanated from the intensive churning of the milky ocean, the heat of the poison proved to be so unbearable that he could not wait for a Himalayan shower. Ganga, the river goddess, is said to have rushed to him and poured all the water she had in possession. This helped him and so, even today, holy water is offered through Jalahari (a copper cup that hangs above the Shivalinga). It is believed that Shiva was not cooled enough even after Ganga poured all the water she possessed over him. He was cooled only when the whole of the moon was tucked in the matted lock of his head. Shiva, after having cooled himself became ecstatic and started dancing the Tandava Nritya.

Sankha

Shankha is a Sanskrit word used to denote a sleek and smooth conch shell. It is believed that if the Shankha is blown with skill, it can scare away evil spirits and is described as a killer of germs and enemies. According to some scholars, it can also be used for preparing many kinds of Ayurvedic medicines and that a certain dose of its powder can cure jaundice, gall bladder, etc. The Hindus as well as the Buddhists drink water from a Shankha before they break a fast and almost all temple prayers are accompanied by the blowing of the Shankha. It is strongly believed that the Shankha had been shaped from the holy waters showered from heaven. Thus it is regarded as a divine jewel always held by Lord Vishnu on his right hand. It was also used as safety bands for young ladies to wear, around their hands, in the form of bracelets and its necklaces were worn to cast away evil eyes.

Chakra (The wheel of right action)

Chakra or the wheel of righteousness is an emblem or tool used as a holy symbol by Hindus and Buddhists. Lord Vishnu , the Hindu god of preservation, always holds a chakra to do away with demons and to protect his devotees and to make sure that Dharma (righteousness) does not retrograde. In Buddhism, some interpret the Chakra as the wheel of life and see it as the teachings of Buddha. We might as well say that it's purpose is similar in Buddhism and Hinduism because the first teachings of Buddha began with the turning of the wheel of Dharma.

Melting pot of Hinduism & Buddhism
The two major religions practiced in Nepal are Hinduism and Buddhism with a majority of the people being Hindus. The two have co-existed through the ages and many Hindu idols are found within Buddhist shrines. Hindus visit Buddhist shrines and Buddhists visit Hindu temples without a second thought as many worship in both. Some gods and goddesses are shared by Hinduism and Buddhism although they have been given different names.

Nepal was declared a secular country by Parliament on 18th May 2006. The other religions practiced in Nepal are: Islam, Christianity, Jainism, Sikhism and Bon. Some of the earliest inhabitants like the Kirants practice their own kind of religion based on ancestor worship and the Tharus practice animism. Over the years, Hinduism and Buddhism have been influenced by these practices which have been modified to form a synthesis of newer beliefs.

Religious Festivals
Most of the festivals celebrated in Nepal have religious significance. The dates of most festivals are fixed by senior astrologers after consulting the lunar calendar. The biggest and most popular festivals are: Dashain, a celebration of Goddess Bhagabati's victory over evil Mahisashur; and Tihar, a celebration of lights dedicated to Goddess Laxmi. Other important religious festivals celebrated by various communities are: Machhendranath Jatra, Indra Jatra, Lhosar, Maghi, Chhat, Christmas, Id and many more.

Nepal has several ancient pilgrimage sites. Each temple is attached to a legend or belief that glorifies the miraculous powers of its deity. Kathmandu Valley is home to the famous PashupatinathTemple, Swoyambhunath Stupa and several other well-known temples. There are hundreds of temples in and around the Kathmandu Valley and some fabulously designed stupas.

Some well-known pilgrimage sites are: Barah Chhetra, Halesi Mahadev, Janaki Temple, Pathibhara, Tengboche in East Nepal; Manokamana in Gorkha district, Lumbini, Muktinath, Gosainkunda, Tansen, Pashupatinath, Swoyanbhunath and Boudhanath in Kathmandu Valley in Central Nepal; and Sworgadwari, Khaptad Ashram in West Nepal. Muktinath in the Annapurna region and Gosainkunda in the Langtang region are well-known pilgrimage sites that fall along popular trekking routes.

Nepal is also the gateway to Mt. Kailash, the mythical abode of Lord Shiva and the holy Mansarovar nearby. There are churches, mosques and gurudwaras located in different parts of the country.

According to the Central Bureau of Statistics, the total population of Nepal was 26,427,99 in 2007. The population comprises people of more than 100 multiple ethnic groups who speak about 93 different languages and dialects which are further divided into different castes. The distinction in caste still plays a significant part in a Nepali’ life when it comes to marriage.

Some of the main ethnic groups are: Gurungs and Magars who live mainly in the western region; Rais, Limbus and Sunwars who live in the eastern middle hills; Sherpas, Manangbas and Lopas who live near the mountains of Everest, Annapurna and Mustang respectively; Newars who live in and around the Kathmandu valley; Tharus, Yadavas, Satar, Rajvanshis and Dhimals who live in the Tarai region; and Brahmins, Chhetris and Thakuris generally spread over all parts of the country.

Nepali is the official language of the state, spoken and understood by almost all the people of Nepal. English is spoken by many in government and business offices. It is the mode of education in most private schools of Kathmandu and some other cities.

Nepal HIstory

Recorded history of Nepal is centered on the Kathmandu valley and begins with the Kirantis who are said to have ruled for many centuries beginning from the 7th or 8th Century B.C. with their famous King Yalumber who is even mentioned in the epic, ‘Mahabharata’. The Gopalas who were herdsmen are believed to have ruled before the Kirantis but little is known about them. Their descendants are said to still live at the edge of the valley. Around 300 A.D. the Lichavis arrived from northern India and overthrew the Kirantis. The descendants of the Kirantis are the Rais and Limbus who predominate in eastern Nepal. One of the legacies of the Lichavis is the fabulous Changu Narayan temple near Bhaktapur which dates back to the 5th Century. In early 7th Century, Amshuvarman, the first Thakuri king took over the throne from his father-in-law who was a Lichavi. He married off his daughter Bhrikuti to the famous Tibetan King Tsong Tsen Gampo thus establishing good relations with that country. Bhrikuti went on to convert the king to Buddhism. The Lichavis brought art and architecture to the valley but the Golden age of creativity arrived with the Mallas who came to power around 1200 A.D..

During their 550 year rule, the Mallas built an amazing number of temples and splendid palaces with picturesque squares that are lined with architecturally beautiful temples. It was also during their rule that society and the cities became well organized; religious festivals were introduced and literature, music and art were encouraged. Sadly after the death of Yaksha Malla, the valley was divided into three kingdoms: Kathmandu (Kantipur), Bhaktapur (Bhadgaon) and Patan (Lalitpur). The rivalry among these kingdoms led to the building of grand palaces and the uplifting of the arts and culture. Around this time, the Nepal as we know it today was divided into about 46 independent principalities. One among these was the kingdom of Gorkha with a Shah king in power. Much of Kathmandu valley’s history around this time was recorded by Capuchin friars who lived here on their way in and out of Tibet.

An ambitious Gorkha King named Prithvi Narayan Shah embarked on a conquering mission that led to the defeat of all the kingdoms in the valley (including Kirtipur which was an independent state) by 1769. Instead of annexing the newly acquired states to his kingdom of Gorkha, Prithvi Narayan decided to move his capital to Kathmandu establishing the Shah dynasty which ruled unified Nepal from 1769 to 2008 when the last Shah ruler, Gyanendra relinquished his power to make way for total democracy under the rule of a Prime Minister. The history of the Gorkha state goes back to 1559 when Dravya Shah established a kingdom in an area chiefly inhabited by Magars. At this time the Kathmandu valley was ruled by the Malla kings. During the 17th and early 18thcenturies, Gorkha continued a slow expansion, conquering various states while forging alliances with others. Prithvi Narayan dedicated himself at an early age to the conquest of the Kathmandu valley. Recognizing the threat of the British Raj in India, he dismissed European missionaries from the country and for more than a century, Nepal remained in isolation.

During the mid-19th century Jung Bahadur Rana became Nepal's first prime minister to wield absolute power relegating the Shah king to a mere figurehead. He started a hereditary reign of the Ranas that lasted for 104 years during which time the Shah kings had no real power. The Ranas were overthrown in a democracy movement of the early 1950s with support from an unlikely person, the monarch of Nepal, King Tribhuvan. Soon after the overthrow of the Ranas, King Tribhuvan was reinstated as the head of the state. In early 1959, Tribhuvan's son King Mahendra issued a new constitution, and the first democratic elections for a national assembly were held. The Nepali Congress Party was victorious and their leader, Bishweshwar Prasad Koirala formed a government and served as prime minister. But by 1960, King Mahendra had changed his mind and dissolved Parliament, dismissing the first democratic government.

After many years of struggle when the political parties were banned, they finally mustered enough courage to start a People's Movement in 1990. With the public rising up against absolute monarchy and demanding democracy, King Birendra accepted constitutional reforms and established a multiparty parliament with himself as head of state and a Prime Minister heading the government. In May 1991, Nepal held its first parliamentary elections. In February 1996, one of the Maoist parties went underground to wage a ruthless people's war against monarchy and the elected government. Then on 1st June 2001, a horrific tragedy wiped out the royal family along with many of their close relatives. The massacre was blamed on the Crown prince Dipendra who is said to have killed them all single-handedly and eventually shot himself in the head. With only King Birendra’s brother, Gyanendra and his family surviving, he was crowned the king. King Gyanendra tolerated the elected government for only a short while and then dismissed Parliament to grab absolute power. In April 2006, strikes and street protests in Kathmandu led to a 19-day curfew and the political parties joined forces with the Maoist rebels to bring pressure on the errant monarch. Eventually, King Gyanendra realized it was futile holding on to power and relented. He agreed to reinstate parliament. But the political parties and a majority of the general public had had enough of dynastic rule and their abuse of power. During the month of Kartik (late September and early October), the Nepalese people indulge in the biggest festival of the year, Dashain. Dashain is the longest and the most auspicious festival in the Nepalese annual calendar, celebrated by Nepalese of all caste and creed throughout the country. The fifteen days of celebration occurs during the bright lunar fortnight ending on the day of the full moon. Thorough out the kingdom of Nepal the goddess Durga in all her manifestations are worshiped with innumerable pujas, abundant offerings and thousands of animal sacrifices for the ritual holy bathing, thus drenching the goddess for days in blood.

Dashain commemorates a great victory of the gods over the wicked demons. One of the victory stories told is the Ramayan, where the lord Ram after a big struggle slaughtered Ravana, the fiendish king of demons. It is said that lord Ram was successful in the battle only when goddess Durga was evoked. The main celebration glorifies the triumph of good over evil and is symbolized by goddess Durga slaying the terrible demon Mahisasur, who terrorised the earth in the guise of a brutal water buffalo. The first nine days signify the nine days of ferrous battle between goddess Durga and the demon Mahisasur. The tenth day is the day when Mahisasur was slain and the last five days symbolise the celebration of the victory with the blessing of the goddess. Dashain is celebrated with great rejoice, and goddess Durga is worshiped throughout the kingdom as the divine mother goddess.

Flour and Fauna in Nepal

Ranging from the subtropical forests of the Terai to the great peaks of the Himalayas in the north, Nepal abounds with some
of the most spectacular sceneries in the whole of Asia, with a variety of fauna and flora also unparalleled elsewhere in the region. Between NepalÕs geographical extremes, one may find every vegetational type, from the treeless steppes of the Trans-Himalayan region in the extreme north and the birch, silver fir, larch and hemlock of the higher valleys to the oak, pine and rhododendron of the intermediate altitudes and the great sal and sissau forests of the south.

The rolling densely forested hills and broad Dun valleys of the Terai along with other parts of the country, were formerly, renowned for their abundance and variety o wildlife. Though somewhat depleted as a result of agricultural settlements, deforestation, poaching and other causes, Nepal can still boast richer and more varied flora and fauna than any other area in Asia. For practical purposes, NepalÕs flora and fauna can be divided into four regions:-

1. Tropical Deciduous Monsoon Forest:

This includes the Terai plains and the broad flat valleys or Duns found between successive hill ranges. The dominant tree species of this area are Sal (Shorea Robusta), sometimes associated with Semal (Bombax malabricum), Asna (Terminalia termentosa), Dalbergia spp and other species, and Pinus rosburghi occurring on the higher ridges of the Churia hills, which in places reach an altitude of 1800m. Tall coarse two-meter high elephant grass originally covered much of the Dun valleys but has now been largely replaced by agricultural settlements. The pipal (ficus religiosa) and the ÔbanyanÕ (ficus bengalensis) are to be noticed with their specific natural characteristics. This tropical zone is NepalÕs richest area for wildlife, with gaurs, buffaloes, four species of deer, tigers, leopards and other animals found in the forest areas rhinoceros, swamp deer and hot deer found in the valley grasslands and two species of crocodile and the Gangetic dolphin inhabiting the rivers. The principal birds are the peacock, jungle fowl and black partridge, while migratory duck and geese swarm on the ponds and lakes and big rivers of Terai. Terai forests are full of jasmin, minosa, accecia reeds and bamboo.

2. Subtropical Mixed Evergreen Forest:

This includes the Mahabharat Lekh, which rises to a height of about 2400m and comprises the outer wall of the Himalayan range. Great rivers such as the Karnali, Narayani, and Sapta Koshi flow through this area into the broad plains of the Terai. This zone also includes the so-called Ômiddle hillsÕ which extend northwards in a somewhat confused maze of ridges and valleys to the foot of the great Himalayas. Among the tree species characteristic of this region are Castenopsis indica in association with Schima wallichii, and other species such as Alnus nepalensis, Acer oblongum and various species of oak and rhododendron which cover the higher slopes where deforestation has not yet taken place. Orchids clothe the stems of trees and gigantic climbers smother their heads. The variety and abundance of the flora and fauna increase progressively with decreasing altitude and increasing luxurance of the vegetation. This zone is generally poor in wildlife. The only mammals, which are at all widely distributed, are wild boar, barking deer, serow, ghoral and bears. Different varieties of birds are also found in this zone. 3. Temperate Evergreen Forest:

Northward, on the lower slopes and spurs of the great Himalayas, oaks and pines are the dominant species up to an altitude of about 2400m above which are found dense conifer forests including Picea, Tusga, Larix and Abies spp. The latter is usually confined to higher elevations with Betula typically marking the upper limit of the tree line. At about 3600 to 3900m, rhododendron, bamboo and maples are commonly associated with the coniferous zone. Composition of he forest varies considerably with coniferous predominating in the west and eracaceous in the east. The wildlife of this region includes the Himalayan bear, serow, ghoral, barking deer and wildboar, with Himalayan tahr sometimes being seen on steep rocky faces above 2400m. The red panda is among the more interesting of the mammals found in this zone; it appears to be fairly distributed in suitable areas of the forest above 1800m. The rich and varied avifauna of this region includes several spectacular and beautiful pheasants, including the Danfe pheasant, NepalÕs national bird.

4. Subalpine and Alpine Zone:

Above the tree line, rhododendron, juniper scrub and other procumbent woody vegetation may extend to about 4200m where it is then succeeded by t a tundra-like association of short grasses, sedge mosses and alpine plants wherever there is sufficient soil. This continues up to the lower limit of perpetual snow and ice at about 5100m. The mammalian faun is sparse and unlikely to include any species other than Himalayan marmots, mouse hare, tahr, musk deer, snow leopard and occasionally blue sheep. In former times, the wild Yak and great Tibetan sheep could also be sighted in this region and it is possible that a few may still be surviving in areas such as Dolpa and Humla. The bird life at such as lammergeyer, snowcock, snowpatridge, choughs and bunting, with redstarts and dippers often seen along the streams and rivulets. Yaks are the only livestock, which thrive at high altitude. They serve both back and draught animals. The cheeses prepared out of the milk are edible for months. The female Yak provides milk to the Sherpas.

Of the wonderful flora and fauna must suffice to indicate what a paradise Nepal is to the lovers of wild animal and bird life, to the naturalists and to the foresters.

In the northern region of high Himalayas, the Tibetan speaking, the Sherpas, the Dolpas, the Lopas, the Baragaonlis, the Manangis live in different settlements scattered along the country. The Sherpas are mainly confined in the east in the Solu and Khumbu region. The Baragaonlis and the Lopas live in the semi- deserted area of the upper and lower Mustang in the part of the Tibetan plateau in the rain shadow area; the Managis in the Manang district and the adjacent areas; and the Dolpas in the highest settlements on the earth in the Dolpa district of Nepal ( in the west) at an altitude of above 4000 m.

In the middle hills and valleys, there coexists numerous ethnic groups. Among them are the Magars, Gurungs, Tamangs, Sunuwars, Newars, Thakalis, Chepangs and majority of Brahmans and Chhetris. The Brahmans and Chhetris have long dominance in all pervading social, religious and political realms. There are also some occupational castes e.g. the Damai ( tailor), Sarki ( Cobbler), Kami (Blacksmith) and Sunar (Goldsmiths). Though, there exists numerous dialects, the language of unification is the national language, Nepali, an Indo- Aryan language.

Sankhu is one of the Beautiful and ancient place of kathmandu valley.Sankhu is a village developemnt committee in Kathmandu District in the Bagmati Zone of central Nepal. At the time of the 1991 Nepal census it had a population of 2097 residing in 353 individual households.^[1]

This place is also known as the Eighty Siddhas as there are four of five caves where the siddhas of India are said to have stayed. One of the caves is also said to have been the practice cave of Nagarjuna, and an image of the great master which was originally in the cave has been taken outside and placed some distance away.

The present temple was built by Raja Prakas Malla in 1655. It enshrines the main sacred representations of this site, Ugra-tara manifesting as Ekazati, which are said to give very powerful blessings, particularly the image in the upper temple. The image in the lower temple is red in colour with one face and four arms, two of which hold a skull-cup (kapala) and knife at her heart, and the remaining two hold a sword and an utpala lotus. In the upper temple is an identical image of Ugra-tara in bell metal, in which her left leg is outstretched. In the upper temple is the loom of the Nepali Princess Brhikuti, spouse of the Tibetan king Songtsen Gampo. In both the upper and lower temples, Vajrayogini is flanked Baghini and Singhini, the Tiger and Lion-headed Yoginis. In the same upper room in the upper temple is a solid bronze standing Buddha and a standing Lokeshvara. Below this shrine room is a small room containing self-arisen (swayambhu) stupa in stone.
